History of the Challenge Coin

30 Jan 2017 by Jason Potts

The most common theory behind the challenge coin started with World War I and the Army Air Corps ( a precursor of the current United States Air Force). During WW1, a wealthy lieutenant ordered several small, bronze struck, gold-plated coins featuring the squadron’s logo. One pilot placed the coin in leather pouch and wore it around his neck.

While on a mission, this particular pilot encounter heavy ground fire and landed his plane behind enemy lines. He was soon captured by a German patrol and was held captive in a German controlled French village near the front. That night, the British bombarded the village and the fortunate pilot was able to escape in the confusion.

Wearing civilian clothes, the pilot was able to avoid capture and make his way to a French patrol. However, all of his identification was taken by the Germans and had no official documents to prove his identity. The French assumed he was a German saboteur and began preparing for his execution. Fortunately, the young pilot offered his coin as proof of American citizenship, which saved his life.

Once the pilot safely returned to his squadron, it became tradition for all members to carry their coin at all times. In order to ensure compliance, the pilots would challenge each other to show their coin upon request. If the challenged pilot failed to show his coin, he would buy the challenger a drink. If the challenged pilot did have his coin, the challenger would buy the challenged pilot a drink.

Today, the challenge coin remains a part of U.S military tradition. This tradition has since expanded into other areas of society such as police, fire departments and social groups.

We are proud to carry on this tradition of a challenge coin with the Harley Owners Group®. A H.O.G.® challenge coin is a tangible way of showing your pride of owning a piece of American motoring legend.
